What is Jolly Phonics?

Jolly Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing. It starts with learning the letter sounds of English. Children then learn how to ‘blend’ these letter sounds together to read a word, so that d-o-g becomes the spoken ‘dog’. They then learn how to ’segment’ a word into its sounds, so that the spoken ‘dog’ is heard as d-o-g. This is necessary for writing. To put the learning into practice, suitable ‘decodable’ reading books are used.
